Save on your Summer Energy Bill

Finally! Summer is almost here. Homeowners and renters in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota can put those space heaters, winter clothes, and heavy blankets in storage. From bone-shivering temperatures to scorching rays of sunlight, here are a few ways to stay cool this summer.

Windows and Exterior Doors:
Ensure windows and exterior doors are closed when the AC system is turned on. Are you aware of drafts coming from your windows and door frames? Identify problematic areas and install rubber or foam weathering stripping. This will create a better seal and help prevent cool air from escaping.

Weather-stripping installation is relatively inexpensive and ideal for renters more constricted to repairs. Homeowners should consider investing in new windows and better-framed doors for long-term results. You will notice that the efficiency of your AC system will increase exponentially.

Sunlight Exposure:
Close the blinds or drapes during the daytime to prevent the greenhouse effect of the sun. The sunlight will increase internal temperatures and make cooling living areas more difficult. You can take advantage of natural sunlight early morning and late evening when the temperatures are not as hot.

Fans, fans, and more fans:
Do you have a portable or ceiling fan that constantly runs and never gets a rest? Fortunately, they will come in handy this summer. Instead of relying on the AC system 24/7, place portable fans in areas where you spend a significant amount of time. In addition, ceiling fans should be set to spin counter-clockwise to circulate air downward. On days with less extreme heat, try opening the windows and using fans to make the area more comfortable.

Update Thermostat:
Homeowners, have you updated your thermostat to more modern technology? As we explained in Simple Ways to Save on Your Winter Energy Bill, smart thermostats allow you to have programmable temperature presets and remote access to control your AC system on the go. Smart thermostats allow you to strategically turn on and off the AC system to maintain preferred temperatures when you are at work or gone for an extended period.

System Maintenance:
When did you last replace the air filter in your AC system? Dirty filters restrict airflow and reduce the AC’s ability to absorb heat. This simple fix is easy and cost-effective, ensuring the system runs efficiently. It is recommended to replace the filter every 2-3 months.

Furthermore, certified technicians should complete more complex maintenance. Schedule an appointment at the beginning of the spring or summer to increase the system’s longevity. The technician will determine if any issues need to be addressed.
