Ways to Recognize Fraudulent Websites While Shopping Online

Do you like online shopping? Protect your online experiences by implementing Frandsen’s tips on how to spot fake websites.

Domain Names:
Before navigating a website, analyze the domain name for irregularities. For example, HomeDepot.com might be modified to H0meDep0t.com by replacing the letter o’s with zeros.
Furthermore, does the website include HTTPS or HTTP? HTTPS informs us that the website uses encryption to protect sensitive data within the web application. Consumers can verify this security feature by locating the “Lock Icon” to the left of the domain name.

Although, HTTPS does not always mean the website is safe for consumer use. Cybercriminals know the general belief behind HTTPS, so it is recommended to consider additional factors for identifying fake websites.

Spelling Errors: Consistent spelling errors are common warning signs of an illegitimate website. Before clicking or providing personal information, read the text thoroughly to identify mistakes.

Graphics: Analyze the graphic (image) quality on the website. Images on fake websites are typically low-quality uploads from the internet. Companies tend to contribute a significant amount of money to make their websites look presentable.
*Consumers can attempt a reverse image search to try and generate online results regarding concerns.

Web Design: When the webpage is not user-friendly, and fields don’t respond appropriately, it may be a fair assumption that it is fake. Ask yourself, “Have you visited the company’s website before?” If yes, identifying issues with the webpage should be a straightforward process.
In addition, fake “small business” websites tend to have coding errors and uncreative designs. When visiting a new business site, take your time and be apprehensive until you can confirm legitimacy.

Discounts:
Internet shoppers searching for better deals at retail stores will face enticing advertisements. Cybercriminals will advertise popular products at discounted prices to attract droves of online shoppers to their websites. Here is an excellent rule of thumb, if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Payment Methods:
It is a common practice for fake websites to include unconventional payment methods such as Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, gift cards, cryptocurrency, and wire transfers. Websites must follow specific regulations, including clear terms and conditions, an imprint of company contact information, encrypted checkouts, and finalized payment details.

Privacy Policy:
The privacy policy informs the consumer how the business plans to protect and disperse personal information. While navigating a website, scroll down to the footer and locate the privacy policy. (Location may vary). If the field is not easily accessible and does not include standard information, it might signify an illegitimate company.

Reviews:
Are you questioning the legitimacy of a website you recently visited? Google reviews can be an effective tool for additional assistance. If other consumers are experiencing similar issues, it is a good indication that the website is untrustworthy.

Reporting:
When you become aware of fake websites, report the scam(s) to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and EConsumer.gov.
What do these agencies do? The Federal Trade Commission can’t resolve fraudulent transactions on fake websites, but the agency shares the report with all levels of law enforcement. Furthermore, the FTC can guide you toward the next steps. The IC3 will send federal, state, and local law enforcement reports to inform the agencies of internet-related crimes. EConsumer.gov handle reports involving online shopping and e-commerce transactions with foreign companies.
