How to Avoid the Social Media Card Cracking Scam

What starts as a simple message promising fast cash can quickly turn into a serious financial mistake. Here is what you should know about the scam.

Card cracking is a growing social media scam that puts your bank account and financial future at risk.

What starts as a simple message promising fast cash can quickly turn into a serious financial mistake. Card cracking is an increasingly common scam that uses social media to convince individuals to share debit cards or account access, often leaving victims responsible for the fallout.

What Is Card Cracking?

Card cracking is an online scam that promises quick and easy cash. Victims are often instructed to share their debit card number, Personal Identification Number (PIN), and online banking login information. Scammers then use this information to deposit fake or stolen checks or withdraw cash from ATMs, offering a portion of the money as a “kickback” for participating.

In these situations, fraud occurs when an individual knowingly provides their banking information and later reports the transaction as unauthorized after the funds have been withdrawn. Submitting false fraud claims may result in account closure, financial loss, and potential legal consequences.

Quick Tips

  • Do not respond to unsolicited messages on social media

  • Do not share online and mobile banking passcodes

  • Do not share debit card information

If you receive suspicious messages from an account attempting this scam, report the issue to the social media platform.
