How to Stay Safe at the ATM

Essential tips on staying vigilant and ensuring your transactions are secure.

Bank smarter and more securely, anytime, anywhere.

ATMs are a quick and convenient way to access your money, but it’s important to stay alert and aware when using them. Whether you’re withdrawing cash, making a deposit, or just checking your balances, taking a few simple precautions can go a long way in protecting your personal information and finances.

What is an ATM?

ATM stands for Automated Teller Machine, which provides standard banking services, such as withdrawing cash, depositing checks, and checking account balances.

ATM Safety Tips You Can Use Today

  • Plan your ATM stops ahead of time to limit time at the machine

  • Have your card ready before you approach the ATM

  • Check the machine for anything unusual or tampered with before inserting your card

  • Keep your cash out of sight, do not count it in public

  • Protect your PIN number when entering the code

  • Quickly secure your card, cash, and receipt before leaving

Watch for Skimming Devices: Know the Signs

ATMs in public places like gas stations or grocery stores are more likely to be tampered with than those at a bank. Criminals attach skimming devices to steal your card information. These can be hard to spot, but a quick visual can help keep your money safe. Here’s what to look for:

  • Keypad feels loose or thicker than normal (could be a fake overlay)

  • Buttons are hard to press

  • Card slot looks loose or wobbly

  • Parts of the machine look misaligned

  • Colors or materials don’t match the rest of the ATM

"ATM security really comes down to awareness. Taking just a few seconds to look over the machine and protect your information can make all the difference, says Tally Rasmussen, fraud manager at Frandsen Bank & Trust. “ If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Trust your instincts and stay safe.”

If you suspect your card has been compromised due to a skimming device, please call or visit your local Frandsen Bank & Trust branch.
