Whether you own or rent, winter can bring higher heating costs. To help keep your space warm without breaking the bank, here are a few easy ways to reduce your energy bill.

Whether you own or rent, winter can bring higher heating costs. To help keep your space warm without breaking the bank, here are a few easy ways to reduce your energy bill.
The simplest way to reduce your winter energy bill is to set the temperature to a more moderate level. Regulating thermostat temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees can help reduce costs. Consider installing a new thermostat with added features to gain more control of scheduled temperature changes and to access to turn the system off if you are not home.
Maintaining your home’s internal temperature between 68 and 70 degrees may make it uncomfortable for some people. When lounging at home, wear sweats, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, socks, and other items of clothing to remain comfortable. Heated blankets can also be a cheaper alternative to raising the thermostat.
Air leaks in windows and doors can be troublesome for maintaining your home’s internal temperature. Inspect each window and doorway to identify potential air leaks. Caulk and weatherstripping are affordable solutions to seal and prevent warm air from escaping.
The damper on fireplaces should remain closed unless you have an active fire. If the fireplace is not used for the winter, plug and seal the chimney flue. When the fireplace is being used, try to limit the loss of warm air.
Add caulk and weather stripping around the hearth
Inspect the seal around the flue damper
Purchase tempered glass and heat exchangers to increase efficiency by blowing air back into the room
System maintenance depends on the specific heating system in the house or apartment (furnace, boiler, heat pumps, etc.). Schedule routine maintenance to ensure the system runs efficiently. This process may differ based on whether you rent or own.
Keeping your home warm in the winter doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. By adjusting your thermostat, sealing drafts, adding more layers, and keeping up with system maintenance, you can make a noticeable difference in your energy usage. Small, simple changes can go a long way toward keeping costs under control throughout the winter.
