Simple Tips to Save on Your Winter Energy Expenses

Homeowners and renters will experience some of the same issues during the winter season. Heating your house or apartment can be expensive, so here are a few tips for reducing your energy bill.

Thermostat Settings:
The simple solution for reducing your energy bill can be lowering the temperature to more moderate settings. Regulating thermostat temperatures between 68 and 70 degrees can help reduce energy costs. To help with the transition, consider installing a “Smart Thermostat” with the following features: Voice command, remote access, and programmable temperature preset.

Bundle Up:
68 and 70 degrees might be too cold for some individuals, but here are a few ways to prevent increasing the thermostat temperature. When lounging at home, wear sweats, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, socks, and other items of clothing to remain comfortable. Heated blankets can also be a cheaper alternative than running the thermostat higher.

Drafty Windows and Doors:
Air leaks in windows and doors will cause issues while regulating your home’s internal temperature. Inspect each window and doorway to identify potential air leaks. Caulk and weather stripping are affordable solutions to seal and prevent warm air from escaping the house.

Fireplaces:
The damper on fireplaces should remain closed unless a fire is burning, and if the fireplace is not used for the winter, plug and seal the chimney flue. When the fireplace is being used, try and do the following.
  • Add caulk and weather stripping around the hearth.
  • Inspect the seal around the flue damper.
  • Purchase tempered glass and heat exchangers to increase efficiency by blowing air back into the room.
System Maintenance:
System maintenance depends on the specific heating system in the house or apartment (furnace, boiler, heat pumps, etc.). Schedule routine services to ensure the system is running efficiently. This process may differ based on whether you rent or own.

[Final Thoughts]
Saving money on your energy bill during the winter will take self-restraint and consistency. By following these simple tips, you should notice a decrease in your monthly energy bill.
