How Do I Write and Endorse a Check

October 13, 2022

by Christian Phillips

Step one: The Date
The payor will place the date on the top-right corner for the bank and payee to reference.
For example, the date can be expressed as October 13th, 2022, or 10/13/2022. Remember to notify the payee of post-dated checks.
[Definition]
What Is a post-dated check? This means the individual wrote a future date, intending that the payee would cash the check at the designated time.

Step two: “Pay to the order of”
Write the complete name of the person or business receiving the payment. Avoid using nicknames or abbreviations on this line.

Step three: Numerical Amount
Write the dollar amount that is being paid to the recipient. The numerical form is written in the check’s small box on the right-hand side. Write the amount with decimal points so the ATM or banker can accurately allocate the funds to the payee.

Step four: Written Amount
Under the “Pay to the order of,” write the check amount in word form while ensuring it matches the numerical form in step three.
Correct spelling is necessary; write the check in the following form. One thousand Four Hundred Dollars 00/100.

Step five: Sign the check
The payor will sign the check in the bottom right-hand corner using the signature provided when the account was opened. This tells the bank that an authorized signer agrees to pay the individual and the amount indicated on the check.

Step six: Memo
The memo section is optional, but it is beneficial to include the purpose of the check.
For example, October Rent, October Gas Bill, etc.

Endorsing a Check:
Endorsing a check is as simple as writing your name on the back.
It is essential to refrain from endorsing the back of a check made payable to you until you are physically present at your bank, an ATM, or using a mobile deposit, and are prepared to deposit or cash the check right away. Endorsing the check beforehand could lead to someone cashing the check on your behalf and running away with your money in case it gets lost or stolen during transit.
Your signature: Sign using your legal name. If the check is made out using something other than your legal name, (e.g., Pat instead of Patrick or Patricia), sign that name on the second line.

Tips:
  • Write and endorse checks with a permanent-ink pen.
  • Make sure the writing is legible.
  • Record the transaction in the check register.
