The Dangers of Public Wi-Fi and How to Stay Safe

Public wi-fi connections offer convenient access to internet users, but at what cost? Frandsen Bank & Trust wants to warn you about the potential risks of joining public wi-fi connections and how to prevent sensitive information from being compromised.

Public Wi-Fi Warning:
One of the primary threats to users when connecting to public wi-fi connections is the lack of encryption for sensitive data. Consumers should avoid accessing identifiable information such as emails, phone numbers, social security numbers, banking information, business data, and addresses that hackers may use for financial gain.
Unsecured networks allow hackers to place themselves between the user and the network connection. This is called a man-in-the-middle attack (MITM). The hacker can intercept the data when your device relays information to the public network.

Preventative Measures:
Public wi-fi connections are generally ideal for reducing data usage, but they produce significant risk. Consumers searching for safe alternatives should consider unlimited data plans. This option does have the ability to cost more, but it will protect users from potential breaches.

  • Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) enable users to create a secure connection between themselves and the internet. VPNs are the safest option for consumers conducting business on public networks.
  • Wireless Settings on smartphones, tablets, and laptops can be programmed to auto-join to accessible wi-fi networks. If this happens, disable auto connections by accessing mobile/device settings.
  • File sharing on public wi-fi is not recommended. Personal information can be easily obtained if the files are intercepted. Consumers should turn off file-sharing capabilities when connected to public networks, especially if the users are not connected to a VPN.
  • Software updates help prevent corruption on your mobile devices. Patches and system updates should be installed immediately after release to ensure the device is equipped with proper safeguards. Security issues often present themselves when software updates need to be installed.
